Xiang and Eisu actually met during The Incident™ when Norweni lost her eye. At the time Xiang was working as an assistant for a local healer in *mumblemumble* someplace i haven't bothered to name yet but it isn't on the island *mumble*. Norweni eventually got tired of them making eyes at each other and basically shoved them together and told them to go kiss it out or else she would lock them in a room together somewhere.

Xiang grew up the eldest son of a prestigious family with a father who expected him to excel at whatever he was taught--mathematics, swordsmanship, music, etc. He was also expected to marry a woman and produce heirs for the family, something he very much did not want to do. After the first meeting with the girl he was supposed to marry, he took a horse and fled in the night, eventually leaving the country entirely. (The girl herself was very nice, and Xiang hopes she eventually wed someone who actually wanted to marry her.)

From there, he didn't really settle anywhere for long. After Norweni healed and moved on to sulk at home/tell Maccus to not do stupid things, Xiang and Eisu traveled together to wherever sounded interesting and only occasionally got into trouble. I'm not sure yet exactly how they ended up with Drustan.
